ARCHIVES

Our Archives is a repository which holds the historical collections of Gwinnett Historical Society. These collections include documents, photographs, genealogies, maps, textiles, personal papers, books, publications, and other artifacts which significantly reflect the history of Gwinnett County from pre-European contact and into the twentieth century.

The City of Lawrenceville

The Whitworth Collection

This collection primarily includes Gwinnett County inferior and superior court record books dating from the nineteenth century and tax records kept by James Oliver Whitworth.

Historical Documents

The GHS archives include historical documents such as: letters, deeds, land grants, minutes and other written materials pertaining to government, business, and social organizations from Gwinnett County.

Ephemera

The GHS Ephemera Collection includes cards, school graduation programs, postcards, posters, pamphlets, tokens, tickets and other items.

Original Court Books

This collection includes a portion of the early Gwinnett County Court ledgers/books: some Superior, Inferior, and Ordinary Court Minutes, Early Marriages, and Deeds. Date range: 1819 – 1920s.

Audio Files & Interviews

Here is only a sampling of our audio files of noted historians such as Franklin M. Garrett (author of Atlanta and Environs: A Chronicle of Its People and Events) and Don L. Shadburn, (author of  Unhallowed Intrusion:  A History of Cherokee Families in Forsyth, County) speaking at  GHS general membership meetings.

Historical Photos Pre-1968

The Gwinnett Historical Society photograph collection holds thousands of pictures of the people, their homes, businesses, and towns dating since the invention of photography.

Artifacts & Objects

The GHS archives include a large collection of objects such as furniture, farm implements, other objects used in household and businesses, plus several Native American artifacts found in Gwinnett County.

Textiles

The Gwinnett Historical Society textile collection contains clothing, including hats and accessories, antique woven counterpanes, handsewn quilts, pillows, and dolls. 

Newspapers & Publications

The Gwinnett Historical society houses a large collection of newspaper articles, magazines and other prominent publications dating back to the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Vintage Maps

The Gwinnett Historical Society Archives collection includes a limited number of early Gwinnett County maps.

Image Reproductions

The Gwinnett Historical Society and our research library offer limited digital reproduction services of materials in its collections. Fees are based on scanning services and are available for materials that can withstand the process.  More information on ordering and fees below.

 

Use fees for images intended for commercial and non-profit purposes will be assessed.

Loving Aid Society

The Archives are open by appointment only on Fridays from 10:00 A.M.- 2:00 P.M. Here is a list of what is available in our ARCHIVE COLLECTION at our location. Email archives@gwinnetths.org to schedule an appointment to see any of GHS archive collections in-person.
